250-Mile Cycle Challenge for 250 Years
To mark the school’s 250th anniversary, a team of five cyclists, including Principal Stephen Moore, will embark on a 250-mile pilgrimage on two wheels, retracing the journey our first Headmaster, John Gough would have taken from his birthplace in Kendal to Lisburn, where he is buried. Inspired by our school’s Quaker heritage, this journey, which will take place from 27– 30 August 2024, will pay tribute to the school’s history and help raise funds for the FSL250 legacy projects.
The Route
2024 marks not only the 250th anniversary of the school, but also the 400th anniversary of the birth of George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement. As they will be staying in the heart of George Fox country, the team will visit some of the sites associated with his life and work before they leave the area. The journey itself will begin at the Quaker Meeting House in Kendal and will continue south before crossing the Irish Sea at Birkenhead. The team will visit Dublin, where John Gough taught for 24 years, before making the journey north to Moyallon and onwards to Lisburn via the Meeting Houses of Richhill, Lurgan, and Hillsborough.
